TIPS ON CREATING SERIES

IDEAS ON HOW TO USE THE FEATURE

Features are explained using SCENARIOS

  1. Newscast: A newscast is a group of news segments that have been edited together. A typical newscast is 22 minutes long to allow time for advertisements. You may decide to create a newscast as part of your content. Start by assigning roles for the newscast, like an anchor, reporter, and producer. Then, write and present the newscast so viewers can enjoy a concise collection of journalism.

Note: A newscast starts with a series of ideas that can be potential stories, but not all stories have news value or are worthy. Each story needs to appeal to your audience. The more they are glued to the screen, the higher your views will be. Good views mean more advertisements, and having many commercial features on your series equates to good income and ROI for the advertiser’s profit.

Suggestions:

Every day, users have to scan through heaps of stories and videos, so it is important that you only choose a handful of those to make a 10- 22 minutes newscast. 8 minutes to be exact, as the remaining airtime is for commercial breaks.

Examples

Beat stories such as on the Office of the President, the Senate, and the Supreme Court, among others.

Reaction media: these are the stories from competing networks, newspapers, and online. Get the idea, do not copy, and expand it into something new or do a follow-up story about it.

News wire: news services like the Associated Press and Reuters provide hundreds of stories daily. Some of these stories can be run as items of national or regional interest.

Press releases: a newsroom receives countless news releases from different companies, organizations, and politicians. It is up to the creator to weigh the news value of these press releases as it may affect your credibility as a creator.

Archived news: these are the stories that can be recycled, such as anniversaries (i.e., 9/11 attacks, Independence Day).

News tips: well-known creators never has a shortage of information tips from the public. Sometimes these tips have no bearing, but some tips can be a potential exclusive story.

Social media: the new media is a good source of information. There are several citizen journalists out there posting viral photos and videos. Suppose the producer wanted these posts to go on-air. In that case, the reporter’s job is to check its legitimacy and make a good story about it.

Personal observations: some of the best story ideas come from personal observation. Reporters and producers should always keep their eyes open in the community and look for ideas. We call these enterprise stories.

Voice-over [VO] package is self-contained taped news by a reporter with edited audio, video, and graphics. It is a complete package. These stories should only run for a minute and a half. A maximum of three minutes is still acceptable if it is a special report.
